Nurse Assistant Professional Appearance: Do's and Don'ts

Maintaining a professional appearance is crucial for nurse assistants. It helps ensure patient safety, prevents infection, and conveys a sense of competence and care.

      Do's:

      • Wear a clean, pressed uniform, clean shoes, and your name badge according to policies.

      • Practice good personal hygiene: Bathe or shower, shampoo your hair, and brush your teeth regularly.

      • Keep nails short, filed smooth, and free of polish. This prevents accidental scratches during care and is essential for infection control.

      • Keep hair neatly styled and pulled back from your face. Long, unsecured hair can get tangled in equipment, be pulled by a confused person or child, and hinder infection control (avoid touching hair with dirty hands or gloves).

      • Keep facial hair trimmed and neat.

      Don'ts:

      • Avoid dangly or excessive jewelry. Necklaces, bracelets, or dangly earrings can be pulled by patients. Rings and bracelets make proper handwashing difficult; it's safest to avoid wearing rings at work, even plain wedding bands, unless specifically permitted.

      • Don't wear fragrance (like perfume or cologne).

      • Don't wear undergarments that show through your uniform (e.g., dark undergarments under a light uniform).
